Just 26 of these gorgeous Nicholson 36 yachts were built by Camper & Nicholson (C & N) in the UK, the first of them in 1960. Peter Nicholson's delicately drawn overhangs have endowed the Nicholson 36 design with the beautiful lines of earlier timber yachts, but these looks belie a serious sailing capability. Owning one of these yachts is about as close as you can come to owning a classic yacht without the trials of maintaining a wooden hull. And classic yachts rarely come with a better pedigree than that of Saracen 11.
Her hull was moulded in fibreglass in 1961 by Halmatic Ltd (UK) and built to heavy scantlings. The Nicholson 36 was the first production fibreglass yacht hull ever built by C & N. Timber decks, Honduras mahogany cockpit, superstructure and the delightful internal fit-out were completed by C & N shipwrights and she was launched in 1963 for sea trials before being loaded aboard a ship and transported to Sydney, Australia where she was first registered in February 1964. With nine Sydney to Hobart races under her belt, the first two under her original owner (later Sir) Robert Crichton-Brown, you know that Saracen 11 is a seriously offshore capable yacht, a proper sailor's yacht of the type that are simply not made anymore.
Always kept under full covers and now offered for sale in excellent condition by her latest custodian, she exudes the character and charm of her era and is a yacht you would be proud to own. She sleeps five, has a galley, enclosed toilet and plenty of storage. Modern convenience by way of headsail furling and mainsail with boom bag and lazy jacks make her easy to sail while her Vetus diesel engine provides ample power to get you home. An Australian Registered Ship, she is just off the slip, freshly anti fouled and her engine was just recently serviced so she is ready to sail away.
